Hardboiled Web Design Shots

Hot on the heels of announcing the new Hardboiled Web Design Fifth Anniversary Edition, I’m also incredibly excited and nervous to let you know about three new Hardboiled Web Design books that will be published throughout the course of next year. We’re calling them ‘Hardboiled Web Design Shots.’

In 2016, this series of three Hardboiled Web Design Shots will investigate topics not normally discussed in books for web designers and developers: designing with a browser; art direction for the web; and selling creative ideas.

These will be practical and inspirational books that will feature contributions from some of the world’s best web designers and developers who will share their knowledge and experiences.

Hardboiled Web Design Shot: Designing with a Browser

Available April 2016
100–120 pages, in digital and print formats.

The processes and tools that many designers use to design websites, digital products and applications have changed little over the years, despite the very different nature of the responsive web today. As the web evolves, the way we design for it must evolve too.

In the first Hardboiled Web Design Shot, art director and designer Andy Clarke will investigate the design processes and tools used by the world’s best web designers and developers. He’ll show how designers are using developer tools in their creative workflows and how designing with a browser can improve a project for everyone involved.

As one of its earliest exponents, Andy has over ten years’ experience of designing with a browser. In this practical and pragmatic Hardboiled Web Design Shot, Andy will draw on his own experiences and those of some of the world’s best experts on designing with a browser.

Hardboiled Web Design Shot: Art Direction for the Web

Available August 2016
100–120 pages, in digital and print formats.

Since the 1960s, art directors in the advertising industry have been responsible for not just how an advertisement looks but how it feels. Art direction evokes emotion and implements a strategy, something that’s as important online as it is in print or on television. Yet the role of an art director plays little part in web design studios today.

In this second Hardboiled Web Design Shot, art director and designer Andy Clarke will teach you about art direction, what it means and why it’s important for the work we do on the web. He’ll show examples of successful art direction and you’ll also learn from the experiences of some of the best art directors and designers working on the web today.

Hardboiled Web Design Shot: Selling Creative Ideas. Cover illustration by Natalie Smith

Hardboiled Web Design Shot: Selling Creative Ideas

Available December 2016
100–120 pages, in digital and print formats.

The job of a designer doesn’t stop at making ideas; it involves selling them too. Selling ideas often doesn’t come naturally to many creative people and as a result even the best ideas can be dismissed.

In the third Hardboiled Web Design Shot, art director and designer Andy Clarke will teach you how to sell ideas simply and effectively to people on in-house teams or paying clients in the outside world. You’ll gain valuable practical advice about pitching ideas and presenting concepts from some of the most experienced designers working on the web today.

The three Hardboiled Web Design Shots will be available throughout 2016 and will be published in all formats from the Smashing Magazine store.
