Video of my ‘Take your stinking paws off my design you damn dirty developers’ talk

When we were in Australia earlier this year, we stopped in Sydney to speak at John Allsopp’s Respond Conference and to teach a workshop. A few weeks before those events, John emailed me:

The folks at SydCSS are fantastic supporters of our events, and last year we did a couple of shared events with them. I’ve dobbed you and I to do a short presentation (it will be the night of Respond.)

Well, OK. Who am I to argue? So on March 19th, John and I took to the stage at a nearby university to give short talks to an assembled group of almost 200 Sydney-based developers at the SydCSS meetup.

It turned out to be one of the highlights of our entire trip. John and I were supposed to be ‘mystery’ speakers, but the organisers had given the audience cardboard ape masks which they held up when I started my talk, so people were pretty much expecting me. No one has ever done something like that for me before and I was honestly, deeply touched. The audience joined in by heckling and played along with my jokes brilliantly. I left SydCSS with the biggest smile on my face.

I like speaking at smaller events as much as I larger ones like Smashing Conference. This time I did the typography portion of my “Take your stinking paws off my design you damn dirty developers” talk. The organisers videoed my talk.

While the quality isn’t perfect, I hope that it captures the atmosphere of a really enjoyable evening.
