Begoña Pereda: Helping an emerging composer stand out from the beginning

A distinctive website for composer Begoña Pereda, inspired by retro music technology and designed to showcase her personality as well as her work.

The challenge

Begoña Pereda is a composer for films, television, and video games based in Mexico City. She’s at the start of her career, so needed a portfolio that would introduce her work to clients while expressing her own personality.

Like many creatives building their first professional website, Begoña could have easily chosen a template. She didn’t do that as she wanted something that us unmistakably hers. She wanted a website that reflects her love of retro music technology, her personality, and the experience of working with her. My challenge was to give this emerging composer a visual identity that felt as distinctive as her music.

My approach

Creative people often want websites that feel personal. When someone commissions a composer, they’re not just buying talent or technical ability. They’re choosing someone who they’ll collaborate with over weeks or months. Before they’ve heard a single piece of music, people already form an impression of the person behind it.

That’s why I didn’t start with Begoña’s design and began by understanding Bego herself and her fascination with analogue recording equipment. Cassette tapes, reel-to-reel recorders, and retro technology aren’t just hobbies, they’re part of her creative persona. Once I’d recognised that, Begoña’s visual direction started to develop.

The solution

Begoña’s finished website combines expressive typography, bespoke SVG illustrations, and playful animations to create an experience that’s every bit as memorable as Bego herself.

Custom reel-to-reel tape machines and cassettes became interactive music players, with animations playing along with her music. I drew every graphic as lightweight SVG artwork before optimising them to ensure her site fast to load.

Typography plays an equally important role. After exploring several options, I chose a display typeface with just the right amount of character before pairing it with a more restrained companion for longer passages of text. The result feels playful without compromising readability. Every illustration, animation, and typographic decision makes it easier to remember Begoña.

Behind the design

Begoña Pereda’s project involved far more experimentation than the finished website might suggest. I spent days exploring typography combinations, sketching ideas, refining SVG illustrations, and building prototypes so I could understand how her animation would feel.

Designing in the browser allowed me to fine-tune every interaction until using the website felt natural. Animation was part of the design language from the very beginning and the result looks effortless because every detail was carefully considered.

The result

This new website gives Begoña’s a portfolio that’s impossible to confuse with anyone else’s. Instead of relying on fashionable frameworks or off-the-shelf templates, my design creates an experience that’s deeply connected to Begoña’s interests and personality. For someone establishing a reputation in a competitive industry, that’s invaluable. The website has become part of her persona, not just a portfolio.

What this project demonstrates

The strongest creative portfolios express someone’s personality and don’t simply present their work. Template websites are fine but they struggle to communicate individuality. That’s why I prefer to begin with the person rather than the platform. Because when a website reflects someone’s interests, it becomes much more than a collection of projects. It becomes something nobody else could own.
