Moonwalk Audio: Designing their studio website that reflects their personality

I designed and developed an imaginative new website for Moonwalk Audio, bringing their world of music and sound to life through playful illustrations, animation, and interactive experiences.

The challenge

Moonwalk Audio creates music, sound design, and interactive audio for video games. With experience spanning more than 1,200 games, their team knows how to make imaginary worlds sound extraordinary.

Their tagline, “Imagine the Sound of Your World,” captures what makes their work special. They don’t simply add music and sound effects to games. They help create the atmosphere, personality, and emotion that make those worlds memorable.

The challenge was to design a website that reflected that same imagination and creativity. It needed to showcase Moonwalk Audio’s experience and expertise while giving potential clients a sense of the people behind the work. Above all, the website needed to feel as imaginative, playful, and full of personality as the worlds Moonwalk Audio helps bring to life.

My approach

I wanted Moonwalk Audio’s website to be more than a showcase for their work. I wanted visitors to experience some of the imagination and playfulness that goes into creating sound for games. Their tagline gave me the starting point. What if their website became a world people could explore, with unexpected things to discover along the way?

The Moonwalk Audio team sent me a collection of objects they wanted to include, from vintage Japanese robots and toy figures to pencils, cardboard scenery, and a plastic dragon. I began sketching ways to bring these seemingly unrelated objects together into one imaginative landscape. I developed an illustration style, combining bold outlines, simple shading, and a limited colour palette.

Then I explored how animation and interaction could bring the illustrations to life. Objects would change from muted colours to full colour when hovered over, inviting visitors to click and discover music and sound effects created by Moonwalk Audio. Rather than simply telling visitors what Moonwalk Audio could do, I wanted the website to let them discover it for themselves.

The solution

I designed a distinctive visual language for Moonwalk Audio, combining bold typography, playful illustrations, and an imaginative colour palette. At the heart of the website is an animated, interactive landscape filled with toys, characters, and unexpected details. Visitors can explore this world, revealing colours, triggering sound effects, and discovering Moonwalk Audio’s work in a way that reflects the creativity behind it.

Every illustration, animation, and interaction was created specifically for Moonwalk Audio. I developed the visual identity, illustrated the characters and scenery, and designed the layouts and typography. I then brought everything together using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, building the website with Eleventy. The result is a fast, responsive website where illustration, animation, and sound work together to create an experience that’s unmistakably Moonwalk Audio.

Behind the design

The project began with conversations about Moonwalk Audio’s personality and how their website could reflect the imagination behind their work. I started with loose pencil sketches, experimenting with ways to combine seemingly unrelated toys and objects into a coherent illustrated world. These evolved into detailed vector illustrations with consistent outlines, shading, and colour.

I designed the interactions to encourage exploration, using colour changes, animation, and sound to reward curiosity. Rather than relying on video or large image files, I built the interactive illustrations using SVG, CSS, and JavaScript. I developed the website with Eleventy, using reusable templates and modern CSS to create a responsive experience.

The result

Moonwalk Audio now has a website that’s every bit as imaginative and full of personality as the games they help bring to life. Instead of simply showcasing their work, the website invites visitors to explore, interact, and discover what makes Moonwalk Audio special. It’s a memorable experience that looks, feels, and sounds unmistakably theirs.

What this project demonstrates

Creative businesses deserve websites that are every bit as imaginative as the work they produce. Too often, their websites rely on conventional layouts and predictable portfolios that tell visitors what they do without giving them a sense of what makes them special. I believe the best websites do more than communicate information. They create experiences that express a company’s personality and give people something to remember. For Moonwalk Audio, that meant turning their imagination into an interactive world where illustration, animation, and sound work together to tell their story.
