The story of how I helped Swiss transport planning consultancy Verkehrsteiner explain complex services more clearly.
Verkehrsteiner is a Bern-based transport planning consultancy specialising in mobility, traffic engineering, and urban planning. They wanted a website that reflected the quality of their work while making their services easier to understand.
As we explored their business, I realised they weren’t simply designing roads or analysing traffic. They were helping people move safely and efficiently through towns and cities. My challenge was to create a website that communicated that broader story while giving people confidence in their expertise.
Every specialist business develops its own vocabulary. My job was to translate Verkehrsteiner’s technical knowledge into something people could understand without losing any of its depth. Every design decision helps explain how people, places, and transport connect. Illustration, typography, layout, and content all work together to make complex ideas feel clear and approachable.
The finished website combines bespoke graphic illustrations and carefully structured editorial layouts to explain Verkehrsteiner’s services. I created an original illustration for each service to help explain ideas that are often difficult to describe using words alone. A restrained colour palette and confident typography also make Verkehrsteiner’s technical information easier to absorb.
Behind the scenes, I developed an Eleventy prototype to demonstrate my design, before handing over to Verkehrsteiner’s locally-based developers.
The more I learned about Verkehrsteiner’s work, the clearer the visual language became. I explored ways to illustrate movement, simplify technical ideas, and create layouts that guide people naturally through detailed information. Every design decision helps visitors understand the business while reinforcing the expertise behind it.
The attention to detail in Verkehrsteiner’s website reflects their expertise without overwhelming visitors with technical language. Visitors gain a clearer understanding of their services through illustration, typography, and carefully structured content, giving them confidence before making contact.
Technical businesses earn confidence by explaining their expertise clearly. By combining illustration, editorial design, and thoughtful typography, I helped Verkehrsteiner create a website that makes complex ideas easier to understand while reflecting the quality of their work.
