The story of how I helped Lockrose promote their specialist consulting business

Lockrose are a team of project management consultants who specialise in projects in the energy sector. To help them expand their business into other sectors, they asked me to redesign and develop their website.

Every business has stories to tell

Before I started sketching, I completed a comprehensive content audit, then worked through a series of wireframes and low-fidelity layouts to design a user journey which would guide people through their expertise and experience. Now, you might not imagine that a subject like energy consulting needs a story-telling approach. But, every business has stories to tell, and for Lockrose that is how their experience in energy is appropriate for public sector projects, transport, and utilities. First, I made initial sketches to illustrate industry sectors.

For the new Lockrose home page, I wanted to illustrate the various aspects of the energy sector, including hydro, nuclear, solar, and wind. I made initial sketches and then developed one into an SVG illustration with animated wind turbine blades and a cheeky nuclear glow.

To explain the steps in their process, I created a series of illustrations which become progressively more complete, starting with a pencil sketch at the start, and a finished artwork at the end. I built these into a tabbed interface with a subtle fade between stages.

Website design and development

Of course, designing a website for a business like Lockrose goes beyond illustration. I adjusted their colour palette to improve how it looks on screen, and replaced their previous generic-looking sans-serif font with a typeface which balances clarity and style. I developed a full suite of pages and added the Eleventy CMS so that the Lockrose team can edit their website content effortlessly.
