Website design

Rudi M van Dijk Foundation

When we heard the story of the National Iraqi Youth Orchestra’s and how the Rudi Martinus van Dijk Foundation supports them, we wanted to devote some of our ‘good causes support days’ to designing a new website.

The Rudi Martinus van Dijk Foundation wanted a new visual identity and a website design that helps promote their important charitable work, so they wrote to us.

Through sponsorship, scholarships and workshops, the Rudi Martinus van Dijk Foundation brings young composers and conductors, who live in parts of the world where there is political strife or economic deprivation, opportunities to develop their musical talents.

Brief

To design a new visual identity and a website to better tell the story of the foundation’s important work and encourage donations from a wider audience.

Inspiration
Inspired by the orchestra

We took inspiration for Rudi Martinus van Dijk Foundation’s new logo from the layout of an orchestra pit.

Work

Dutch Canadian composer Rudi Martinus van Dijk died in 2003 and we wanted a little of Rudi’s spirit to show in our design for the foundation that bears his name. We included design motifs that are taken from one of Rudi’s manuscripts. These hand-drawn elements contrast with the site’s crisp new typography and layout.

We then combined the logo mark’s shape, itself inspired by the layout of an orchestra, with Rudi’s signature to create the foundation’s new logo. We chose two typefaces—Effra and Lexia—from one of our favourite type designers, Dalton Maag and used both in their light weights.

Our commitment to good causes

We love to support charities and non-profit organisations and we offer reduced rates for them. We also keep twelve pro-bono ‘supporting good causes days’ in reserve every year for design and consultancy. Our support for the Rudi Martinus van Dijk Foundation meant spending five days on the project pro-bono and supplying the Perch CMS software.

Duration

We spent two weeks working on this project. The first on branding and user-experience design, the second on copywriting, page layout design and CMS development.
