Early in my career, I drove to Manchester for a job interview and was fascinated by its industrial heritage. Manchester has changed in the 30 years since that interview. New developments have replaced the warehouses and run-down streets close to Manchester City centre. Manchester’s Northern Quarter is now a fashionable area famous for its street art, bars and even a few remaining independent record shops.
Since we moved to North Wales, Manchester has become a place we regularly visit for concerts, shopping and work. Manchester’s Northern Quarter is the home to several clients, including the Shield Safety Group and our favourite bookshop, where we often find inspiration for our web design work.
Manchester is 90 minutes drive away along the M56 motorway and A55 Expressway, and Manchester Airport is even closer. This makes Manchester a hub for travelling to visit web design clients across Europe.
We’ve designed websites for businesses in and around Manchester for over ten years. Early projects included website designs for several commercial photographic studios. More recently, the Shield Safety Group was one of our first product design experiences. We helped them redesign the user experience and interface design of their health and safety compliance product. We delivered a design system and toolkit of responsive HTML and CSS templates to their team of in-house developers.
Manchester has an active community of web designers and developers and is a popular venue for the industry conferences Andy Clarke speaks at regularly. Manchester McrFRED is a regular community event. Speak the Web was a series of events across the North of England including Leeds, Liverpool, and Manchester. At the Manchester event, Andy Clarke launched his 2010 book about website design Hardboiled Web Design.
We’re currently working three weeks every month with Nozomi Networks. The rest of our time, we’re available to work with interesting people on designs for products and websites. We’d love some of those people to be from Manchester. Manchester has become a place we like to spend our time, and we hope to work in Manchester again soon.
