A sneak preview from CSS for Designers

As I head for London, I thought that you might like a sneaky peek at the presentation slides which I have prepared for next week’s Carson Workshop’s CSS For Designers events.

As I head for London, I thought that you might like a sneaky peek at the presentation slides which I have prepared for next week’s Carson Workshop’s CSS For Designers events. There are only a very small handful of places available for the second day, so if you’ve been thinking about attending and haven’t yet booked your place, please do. I would really love to see you there.

Those are some pretty sweet looking slides there. I wish you and Molly all the best. I’m sure you’ll both do really great presentations.

These slides look great. Once the conference is over (I can’t attend), will the rest of the slides be publicly available?

anyway, I hope everything goes well for you and Molly. I just recently subscribed to this site (this is my first comment as well) and love that you update with useful content so frequently.

I have to second (or rather third) this. The slides look pretty impressive, just like one would expect from two great web people.

I wish I could attend the workshop, but it just doesn’t work out, mainly because of schedule issues. And I will also second Zeerus’ inquiry whether the slides will be available after the workshop.

    Hi guys,

The slides will unfortunately not be available for a couple of reasons. The main one is, as this is a paid workshop rather than a conference (we always make our conference stuff available) it would seem unfair to those who have parted with their hard-earned wonga to attend.

I’ve been experimenting recently with seeing how slides look on a colour iPod screen.

I’ve added two iPod size slides for anyone to try out.

My nano screen is a little small to render text very clearly straight out of Keynote, but the iPod transitions are cool. Maybe this is a good excuse to buy a new iPod video? ;)

In addition, I doubt, that there will be podcasts?! Or will there?

Quite gutted I can’t attend (owing, literally, to finances). Possibility of meeting up in the evening for a beer or two isn’t inconceivable though (?)

The snapshots of the slides look great Andy - I’m sure it will be a successful session…your attendees will be spoiled rotten! :)

The slides look great. I expect that in 12 months time, at least in our little world, the days of PowerPoint bulletted lists on colored backgrounds will be well and truly over. And this will be due, in no small part, to the work of your good self, and Doug Bowman.

My only question though: how much trouble do you go to to obtain copyright clearance on the images you use? Is this "fair use"? Or? Have you ever got an advice on this, or know anyone who has? Would just be interested to know, that’s all.

Good luck with the workshop guys, I’m sure it will be awesome.

    Hi Maxine,

As this is for education, we consider the use to be ’fair use’. Where we have used material from web sites or blogs, we have quoted the source right there on the slide (for example Jon Hicks’ 3D box model diagram).

If this were a book or any ’sold’ material, we would of course be required to obtain permission from, and pay a fee to the copyright owner of any images etc. It’s one of the reasons why the slides won’t be available on or after the event.

Another reason is that Molly and I have created a huge amount of new material for this workshop (about 150 hours have gone just on making the slides). On a purely commercial note, we hope to be invited to present this content in other workshops in the future, in London and elsewhere (poke, poke… in Australia?) and so need to keep the content ’exclusive’. I’m sure that a year from now we will be releasing it under Creative Commons, but not right now.

V.Nice slides. You can tell that they are done in Keynote aswell for some strange reason.

Hope the workshop goes well, I am sure it will.

Looking sharp as always Andy. I wish I was gonna be there with you & Mol, I had such a blast in Silicon Valley. Next time, perhaps.

I was kind of expecting that answe about making the slides available to the public and completely understand the reason. So I’m looking forward to the CD Molly mentioned in her comment. And I feel really bummed that I can’t make it :-(

PLEASE, tell Ryan and Gillian you want to do this in the States! Specifically, the Gleacher Center in Chicago. I just attended Eric Meyer’s workshow on CSS and XHTML that Carson did and it was great! Kudos to Ryan and Gill and Eric, of course.

I’m booked on the first date (always like to make it for opening night).

I’m not a code ape but I do need to further understand CSS as I still dream in table-layouts.

I’ve cheated and grabbed the superb RapidWeaver (which will be fine for a lot of my clients’ needs) and so expect to come away with a deeper understanding of the embryonic uses of CSS (ie start as I mean to finish rather than wonder what’s possible in CSS) and maybe enough kung fu to create myself some bespoke RW templates (ie use the app for the donkeywork but "design" the templates upfront using my new found skills).

I’ll be the one without a laptop using the old skool pen and paper ;-)

[I also like the look of keynote having previously not felt the need to grab it - and after finding Pages to be a real chore to use]
