I really enjoy recording podcasts, both my own (One Footer in the Grave and Unfinished Business) and guesting on others. Brad Frost just released an episode of his Waking Up Excited podcast with me on it, and it’s the podcast I’m most proud of making.
Brad has a genuine talent for taking conversations in unexpected directions and listening back; I genuinely have no idea how we veered from nostalgia for Sinar large format cameras to the deeply personal topics of family history and mental health.
We talk about the guilt I felt about my Dad’s suicide, me coming off antidepressants, and what I might do now that I’ve turned sixty. But most importantly, our conversation repeatedly turns back to the connections between life experiences, meaningful objects, and the people who matter.
I sincerely hope you’ll take some time to listen to the episode.
And if you prefer to watch the whole thing on YouTube, where you can see the camera that connects the various threads, you can do that too. Of all the hundreds of podcast recordings I’ve made over the years, this is the one I am proudest of.
